The short answer is: I don’t. I grade for effort, in a very coarse-grained way. If the student completes the project, following all the guidelines and requirements, they get full credit, regardless of the quality of the resulting music. (My assignment guidelines are always technical in nature; I don’t put any restrictions on musical style.) If students don’t follow the guidelines and requirements, or hand the assignment in late, or obviously half-ass it, I deduct points accordingly. I don’t give any consideration to the music itself when grading because then I’d just be grading on how closely the student’s musical taste is to mine, which would be arbitrary and unfair.

“Bad at Love”: Just like the song Halsey sang last year with the Chainsmokers, “Closer,” this song defies a concrete tonal center, camping on what I first heard as the IV and V chords, with just a flirtation to the I chord at the end of the loop. It’s subjective as to how anyone’s ear is going to hear this tonally, at least at first. It’s like that famous “Rabbit-Duck” illusion where some people see a rabbit and others see a duck.

This is a two-part course series dedicated to sampling found sounds at home and turning them into all kinds of beats and tracks in Ableton Live. The first part is taught by Ableton Certified Trainer Brian Jackson, and concerns how to capture sounds using a simple microphone setup at home, and warp them into useable raw materials in Ableton. The second part follows famed YouTuber, beat maker, and educator Andrew Huang as he makes an incredibly compelling song out of nothing but sounds from a kitchen pot — and explains his process step by step on camera.

Located an hour and a half north of San Francisco, on a ranch in Sonoma County wine country, artists of all media are provided with 2-10 weeks of accommodation and work space on the Warnecke Ranch and Vineyard. Resident artists stay in a three-bedroom, 1920s farm house, with studio spaces provided in repurposed barns. It’s perfectly peaceful while offering plenty of opportunities to attend open houses, workshops, lectures, and of course, the chance to mingle with the other artists.
Rappers who are not gangsters
A common distortion pedal for shoegaze is the fuzz, and there’s almost none more famous than the Big Muff Pi. It’s famous for a reason. It creates a high quality, juicy, fat sounding distortion for a comparatively low price and is sought after for its sustain as well. The Big Muff is really quite perfect for creating those colorful walls of noise, but there’s such a huge range of overdrive and distortion pedals out there, you really need to find what fits your personal taste.
Ithaca is one of those college towns that kind of flies under the radar. Beautiful and serene, this secluded college town can often be seen as too remote, even though smart touring artists would be wise to look into the wealth of upstate New York university towns, including Rochester, Buffalo, and Syracuse. Anyway, Ithaca has earned its stripes well as a destination for touring bands, and for good reason. Among its many venues like The Haunt and The Dock, it’s also home to nonprofit Ithaca Underground, which helps emerging artists of all genres book shows and get their start. Plus, they’re one of the few organizations that put together multi-genre shows, so you can see punk rock, acoustic, and hip-hop all on the same bill.
