I recommend getting a professional coach with some years of experience, who you respect as a musician, and who you admire as a singer (I’m simply describing my own vocal coach here).
Using whatever format you want (spreadsheet, notepad, stickies) write down the things you want to get done, say, this month. That way, when you sit down to write songs, record music, email a music industry pro, or whatever, you know exactly what you need to do next. Plus, as you cross things off the list, it’s a little encouragement that you’re making progress.
Susan Boyle does not fit the magazine standard, which of course is basically impossible for any woman, anyhow. Frankly, though, she doesn’t seem too interested in trying to do that. She just walked herself out there on internationally syndicated TV and slayed the competition on Britain’s Got Talent, and it was beautiful. She made a shallow and heartless industry take notice of her talent and judge her not on age or appearance but on the voice she possessed. Since then, she’s been praised by people in all walks of life, and one blogger even reported crying when she saw the video of Boyle singing. Thank you, Susan, you’ve sparked hope in a lot of people that this shallow world can have a heart and can change.

Although most of these modes have been used quite sparsely in Western popular music (and mostly in jazz-fusion), some of them have been used more. The mode built on the fifth degree of a Harmonic minor scale, Phrygian (Major third), for example, has been used in heavy metal by guitarists such as Yngwie Malmsteen or Ritchie Blackmore, while the mode built on the seventh degree of the Melodic Minor scale is commonly used in jazz over altered dominant chords (for example, try to use G# Superlocrian on a G#7(♭13) and unleash its altered, dissonant character).

Let’s say that you’re mixing a project and it’s arrived to you with phase issues built-in. You have a natural snare recording, but when you turn up the accompanying trigger track, it sounds awful. Usually it’s the above comb-filtering and/or a disturbing lack of low end. You can start by flipping the phase button, and see if that gets you where you need to be. Alternatively, you can zoom in on the waveforms and see what’s up.
The archetype of the brilliant-but-jaded musician, beaten down and thwarted by life’s onslaught of challenges, is something we’ve all seen over and over again in popular culture.
