When I was first asked to analyze a pop tune, I felt it was my Canadian duty to avoid Justin Bieber’s tune “Sorry” (which a real Canadian would have pronounced “SORE-ee” rather than “SAW-ree”). However, I live with a semi-secret Belieber, so the song was hard to avoid, and it turns out there’s actually something pretty harmonically hip going on under Justin’s dulcet tones.
This album also did two things beyond Brown himself. First, it would help cement soul and funk as commercially viable mainstream music genres. Soul could be fun, loud, raucous and youthful; not just sentimental and romantic. Secondly, it demonstrated the power of a live album to make money, and assured record producers and labels alike that consumers would be willing to buy the same songs on two different albums if one was live.
When I was 17, I wrote down my DJ goals on a piece of paper. I wanted to play at “Space” or “Pacha” Ibiza. I never got to play Space, but I did become a resident DJ at Pacha for seven years. My advice: If you believe in yourself and are passionate and genuine, you will achieve everything you want.

When recording acoustic guitars, most of the tone is going to come from the guitar itself, the microphone you chose, and the room you record in. You can find some great-sounding acoustic guitars for under $500 that can easily be used for recording. Pair one of these up with the right microphone and a recording space with great acoustics, and you’re good to go. [*Here are some quick tips on recording acoustic guitars if you need them!]

USB microphones are the most convenient way to record a podcast. Simply connect them to the USB port on your computer and press record — no additional gear required. Yet while USB microphones offer an easy, plug-and-play solution for podcasting, they don’t provide the versatility required to pull off larger productions. For that, you’ll need an XLR microphone.

We all love going to see a concert that features giant stage dressings and full costumes à la Empire of the Sun, The Knife, Erykah Badu, and GWAR, but these are all performers who are trying to make “larger than life” music, and push the limits of the performance experience with mountains of finance behind them. Don’t get discouraged! You can still incorporate some big ideas even if you’re making music with less funding.

We are conditioned to think that great vocalists are just born that way — “gifted,” “blessed,” and we wonder if we were given those gifts too… Really? No. Shut up. Try to remember that this is not true. You need to put the work in if you want to be great. It starts with getting yourself a good vocal coach.
